Sustainability + Me │Choose Bamboo
I'm totally converted to using a bamboo toothbrush. It's such a simple swap and makes complete sense. On average a person will throw away 300 disposable toothbrushes in a lifetime. Using bamboo to make the main body of the toothbrush instantly eliminates this wasteful plastic use.
Bamboo grows rapidly and reduces CO2 in the atmosphere while it grows. It also supports many types of life while being a solid income source for those who farm it. According to the Guardian, the prosperity institute estimates that 60% of the value of bamboo goes right back into the pocket of the farmers who grew it. So great news for the local farmers.
Once you remove the bristles which are still made from plastic (or boar bristles), bamboo is 100% biodegradable so will break down naturally and can be used in commercial composting. If bamboo ends up in landfill it will break down in 3 years. But better yet, reuse your bamboo toothbrush as plant labels.
A few tips for the end of your toothbrush's life. Remove the bristles with a pair of pliers and put into your plastic recycling. It's best to put them inside of a bottle so they don't get lost on the journey. If you have a garden waste collection pop the handle in there, alternatively put it your home composting and it will break down in 6 months. Great for adding brown matter into your compost.
Have a great day! Nicky x
